Voices and Visions Revisited: New Interview Series Explores the Black Experience at Northwestern University Amid a Changing National Landscape

At a moment when institutions of higher education across the nation are grappling with unprecedented challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, the authors of Voices and Visions: The Evolution of the Black Experience at Northwestern University are returning to the stories, voices, and history that continue to shape the Black experience at Northwestern.

Originally published in 2018, Voices and Visions chronicled more than 140 years of Black history at Northwestern University through the personal narratives of fifty distinguished alumni, students, administrators, and community leaders. The book provided a unique lens through which readers could understand the progression of Black life on campus, documenting both the barriers faced and the achievements realized across generations.

Now, eight years later, co-authors Dr. Jeffrey Sterling and Lauren Lowery are launching a new interview series that revisits those conversations and expands the historical record by engaging a new generation of influential Northwestern alumni and leaders.

The series will also reconnect with several individuals featured in the original publication to explore how their perspectives have evolved and how current events compare to earlier periods of social and institutional change.

“History provides context,” said Dr. Sterling. “As universities confront renewed debates surrounding race, equity, inclusion, and academic freedom, it is important to understand that these conversations did not emerge in a vacuum. The Black experience at Northwestern has been shaped by generations of students, faculty, and administrators who navigated similar challenges while working to expand opportunity and belonging.”

The interview series seeks to place contemporary developments in historical perspective, examining the progress achieved, the obstacles that remain, and the enduring relevance of Black leadership within higher education.

Featured guests include:

•       Sen. Alice Palmer, former Dean of African American Student Affairs at Northwestern University and former Illinois State Senator, whose decades of leadership helped shape support systems and opportunities for Black students.

•       Dr. Jonathan Holloway, former Northwestern Provost and former President of Rutgers University, one of the nation’s leading scholars of African American history and a prominent voice on the role of diversity and inclusion in higher education.

•       Daphne Maxwell Reid, acclaimed actress, Northwestern’s first Black Homecoming Queen, and a participant in the historic 1968 student takeover of Northwestern’s Bursar’s Office, an event that transformed the university’s approach to Black student recruitment, support, and representation.

Together, these conversations will illuminate pivotal moments in Northwestern’s history while exploring the contemporary challenges and opportunities facing higher education today.

“Voices and Visions was always intended to preserve stories that might otherwise be lost,” said Lowery. “This new project continues that mission by connecting past experiences with present realities and ensuring that future generations understand both the struggles and the triumphs that have defined the Black experience at Northwestern.”

Through candid interviews, personal reflections, and historical analysis, Voices and Visions Revisited will offer audiences an opportunity to engage with the individuals whose leadership, activism, scholarship, and service helped shape the university and broader society.

The series is expected to appeal to Northwestern alumni, students, educators, historians, and anyone interested in the evolving relationship between higher education, race, and social change in America. The podcast launches October 8th and will air every Thursday until November 19th on all podcast platforms, including Spotify, YouTube and Apple.
